Peter Jackson is a former professional football player and manager. In a playing career spanning over 18 years Peter made over 650 appearances for clubs including Bradford City and Huddersfield Town. Since then Peter has had over 9 years experience at managerial level, most recently taking charge at Lincoln City following two spells at Huddersfield Town.
Born in Bradford, Peter began his football career at his hometown club Bradford City. Peter’s innate leadership qualities were apparent at an early age as he became Bradford’s first and youngest captain to lift any silverware for 56 years. On Saturday 11th of May 1985, Peter collected the Division Three Championship trophy, tragically 40 minutes later he witnessed the Bradford fire disaster in which 56 supporters died. Peter co-ordinated players to attend functions for the appeal and personally made it to as many funerals as possible cementing his reputation as being a firm favourite amongst the fans. Peter moved to top flight side Newcastle United in 1986 for two seasons before making a return to Bradford City.
In 1990 Peter moved to Huddersfield Town. Where his leadership qualities were recognised throughout his tenure as he retained the captains arm band under managers Eoein Hand, Ian Ross and Neil Warnock. Peter displayed an early interest in the management and coaching side of football becoming Huddersfield Reserve team coach in 1993. Moving to Chester City in 1994 Peter made 99 appearances and won player of the season at the end of 1996. In 1997 he made the decision to hang up his boots after a brief spell at Halifax Town where he helped them avoid relegation. Just a few months later he started his managerial career at Huddersfield Town.
From 1997 to 1999 he helped Huddersfield avoid relegation and achieve 10th place in Division One. In 2003 he was reappointed manager of Huddersfield who had slid down to Division Three and were emerging from administration. Peter turned the club around by 2004, finishing fourth and winning promotion. The following season Peter continued his impressive run in Division Two finishing 9th and was acknowledged for his success by winning Manager of the Month for August 2005. In the 2005-2006 season Huddersfield finished fourth narrowly missing out on promotion.
Peter left Huddersfield Town to manage Lincoln City in 2007. When he arrived at the club in October they were at the bottom of League Two. In February 2008 Peter was diagnosed with throat cancer he had one month to pull Lincoln City out of a relegation spot before his treatment was to commence. Peter amazed everyone successfully pulling his team from the bottom with 5 wins out of 6 games in February. He became a much deserved recipient of the Manager of the month award in February 2008. He returned to action with a clean bill of health in January 2009.
Leaving Lincoln at the end of 2009 Peter set up a business with his wife and also writes a successful blog for The Football League giving his views on all the latest issues in League 2. With extensive knowledge of football from both a player’s perspective and a manager’s perspective, Peter can offer much insight into the game as a whole and would be a perfect person for punditry.
