Mervyn Day is a former professional goalkeeper and current coach/manager and pundit. Mervyn enjoyed succesful spells in goal for teams including West Ham United, Leyton Orient, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Luton Town, Sheffield United and Carlisle United. Since retiring from professional football Mervyn has managed Carlisle United, been part of the coaching staff at Charlton Athletic and West Ham United and is currently chief scout at Leeds United.
Born in Chelmsford Essex, as a youth Mervyn represented Essex Schools at all levels and was selected for the England Schools squad on six occasions.This did not go unnoticed and in 1971 Mervyn signed a youth contract with West Ham United and then a professional contract in 1973. Mervyn made his West Ham debut that same year in a draw against Ipswich Town while still only 17 years old. He soon became West Ham first choice goalkeeper. In 1975, aged 19 Mervyn became the youngest goalkeeper to appear in a FA Cup Final as West Ham beat Fulham to lift the cup. That same year Mervyn won the Young Player of the Year Award making him the only goalkeeper to have won the award.
In 1979 Mervyn joined Leyton Orient, making 170 appearances for the O's before joining Aston Villa in 1983. Mervyn spent two seasons at Aston Villa before moving to Leeds United in 1985. Mervyn made a total of 227 appearances for Leeds and was a key figure in the side which reached the FA Cup Semi-Finals and League play-off in 1987. In 1990 Mervyn helped Leeds achieve a promotion earning a Division 2 winners medal in the process. After eight years at Leeds Mervyn joined Carlisle United, where he would retire from professional football.
After retiring from professional football Mervyn became manager of former club Carlisle United. Leading the club to promotion to Division Two in 1997. Following this Mervyn enjoyed lengthy spells working with Alan Curbishley as the First Team Coach at Charlton and then West Ham. Having left West Ham following Curbishley's departure Mervyn is currently chief scout at former club Leeds United.
