Craig Short is a former professional footballer and manager. He has played at the highest level in the Premier League and for a period was the most coveted centre-half in England.
Born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, Craig started his professional career at Pickering Town in 1986. The following year he moved to Scarborough and in 1989 to Notts County. After 4 seasons for Notts County and despite attracting interest from numerous Premier League clubs Craig opted to join Derby County.
He signed for £2.5million - a record for a club outside the top flight, and the highest fee for a defender at the time. During his time at Derby Craig also featured on the European stage in the UEFA Cup. Craig completed more than 100 competitive games for both Derby and his next club, Everton who he joined three seasons later. He left the Merseyside club in 1999, joining Blackburn Rovers for £1.7 million - seven years after they had first tried to buy him.
Craig endeared himself to the Rovers' faithful by scoring 2 goals in a 5-0 drubbing of deadly local rivals Burnley in the 2000-01 season. He was a mainstay in a squad that won promotion, the League Cup and established itself back in the top flight.
In the summer of 2005 he moved to Sheffield United and was an important member of the Blades’ successful promotion campaign. He retired at the end of the 2005-06 but was tempted out of retirement with the chance to return to the Premiership for a season before hanging up his boots.
In 2008, it was announced that Craig had joined Sheffield United's sister club, Ferencvaros, as a player-coach. A month or so later Ferencvaros officially signed Craig as manager. Most recently Craig was appointed as the new manager of Notts County.
Having played for some of the most highly respected clubs in the English Premier League, Craig is an adaptable character. His passion for sailing was featured on the Sky Sports series ‘Where Are They Now’. With the sails set, Craig is now looking forward to a long and successful career in management.
