ABOUT

David has been the Daily Mirror’s film critic since 2004, where he has his own weekly column. Known for his withering assessments of what he calls the “burn and churn” of the Hollywood studios, he’s the critic that actors and directors fear.

This is the man who described Guy Ritchie’s Revolver as “so incredibly, absurdly, breathtakingly awful, I wanted to buy a revolver so I could shoot the projectionist before turning the gun on myself”. He also suggested Steve Carell’s comedy Date Night “contained so few laughs it could be prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act” and recommended psychiatric help to anyone who laughed during Meet The Spartans. But he’s also happy to big-up films that he thinks will challenge and entertain cinemagoers, such as 127 Hours, Troll Hunter, Bridesmaids and Drive.

David began his career as a news reporter before being head-hunted by The Mirror to work as a senior features writer in 2002. He’s now the paper’s film editor whose responsibilities include a weekly podcast, home-entertainment reviews and celebrity interviews. Among those he’s interrogated are Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Gemma Arterton, Casey Affleck, Jamie Foxx, Jackie Chan, Eddie Izzard, Simon Cowell and Pixie Lott.

When he’s not catching up with the latest releases in darkened screening rooms, David is contributing to TV shows including News At Ten, GMTV and Sky News. He was also one of Claudia Winkleman’s guests during Sky One’s live Oscar coverage. In addition, he’s been a judge on awards panels sponsored by Bafta, The Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cinema For Peace and the National Union Of Students.

In short, he’s unbiased, unabashed and unafraid to ruffle feathers.
